Restoring the Holy Cell of Axion Estin: Preserving a Sacred Legacy on Mount Athos
The Holy Cell (Kelli) of “Axion Estin” is located in the heart of Mount Athos, adjacent to its capital, Karyes. It is directly connected with the most historic and oldest church of Mount Athos, and the link between them is the icon of the Theotokos “Axion Estin,” which was originally kept in the Cell.
The icon was transferred there after the miraculous appearance of the Archangel Gabriel, when he chanted before it for the first time in Orthodoxy the well-known hymn with the same name, which has since been sung in every Divine Liturgy and in many services of our Church. This extraordinary miracle took place in the year 982, making it one of the oldest miracles of Mount Athos and the Cell of Axion Estin, one of its oldest and most spiritual dependencies.
When our brotherhood undertook the restoration of the Cell in 2014, the condition was heartbreaking. There were half collapsed walls, roofs that leaked, and ceilings in which we could hear mice moving every day. The dangers to our health were many, both from hygiene issues and from possible injuries caused by the crumbling walls and the roof, whose wooden beams had rotted from the rain and the passing of time. Nevertheless, out of love for our Panagia, we decided to give our whole being, everything we had, to restore this place, which in our eyes is the palace of our Panagia, despite all its imperfections and dangers.
Because it was an undertaking that seemed logically impossible, since we ourselves were still inexperienced, the Panagia brought into our path people who helped us with their advice and experience, their constant encouragement and prayers, and financial support when resources were entirely nonexistent. This support was especially important to us, no matter how small it was.
As a result, we succeeded in completing the current workers’ house, a project with which everyone has been very pleased because it faithfully follows the Athonite tradition, with the significant support of MAFA and the Friends from England, and with the advice of craftsmen and others both within and outside Mount Athos, people from Greece and from abroad.
In this way each project at the Cell is completed. Although there is a general plan for its restoration, it must each time be adjusted according to the damage that occurs there.
The earthquakes of the last two years have caused, and continue to cause, deterioration to the already worn masonry as well as to the roofs of the Cell. Living there is practically impossible because of the damage to the building, parts of which are almost collapsing and pose a risk of injury to one of us. For this reason, immediately after the completion of the new building, our brotherhood will move there, transferring all the belongings of the Cell that are necessary for our daily life.
Unfortunately, these earthquakes have also caused damage to the historic church of “Axion Estin,” with two significant cracks in its dome. Our immediate priority, after moving to the new building, is the restoration of this historic church, carrying out every necessary intervention so that this monument of Orthodoxy, with more than 1,000 years of presence on Mount Athos, may be preserved.
For this work your support and assistance are essential. The monks of the Axion Estin Cell would be happy to welcome every Friend who wishes to learn about the project and see the work up close, to venerate and to be informed about anything that may interest them.
MAFA wants to help, and you can make it possible.
MAFA initiated its support for the brothers of the Cell initially through the Friends of Mount Athos and now with a new (2026) appeal to help them rebuild the Cell and its historic and very spiritually significant church.
